Scribble to Open the Path, 120 x 180 inches, charcoal on wall, Miami, Florida, February 22nd, 2025. Photo © Alian Rives' StudioScribble to Open the Path is a large-scale charcoal drawing made directly on the wall, measuring 120 × 180 inches. The work begins with the idea of the path as a space of transition, possibility, and negotiation. Rather than constructing a recognizable symbol, I use the scribble as a deliberately unstable mark—one that accumulates, obscures, and opens space simultaneously. The title evokes the Afro-Cuban spiritual figure associated with crossroads, thresholds, movement, and the opening and closing of paths. I translate this idea through an expansive field of charcoal marks that moves between drawing and gesture. The wall becomes a threshold, while the charcoal functions as a temporary inscription of movement and passage.
