Twilight of the Idols, 40 x 80 inches, charcoal on Canson, 2024. Photo © Alian Rives' StudioTwilight of the Idols is a series of charcoal and ash drawings that explores the fragmentation of spiritual identity through syncretism. Semi-abstract forms derived from different religious traditions create hybrid images in which recognizable symbols become fragmented, displaced, and reconfigured. Charcoal and ashes function as materials of both inscription and destruction, suggesting the erosion and transformation of inherited beliefs. Rather than depicting a singular spiritual entity, the series constructs a fractured one—an unstable composite shaped by cultural exchange, displacement, and the coexistence of multiple spiritual systems.
